This article from Aspen Ridge Dental in Casper WY is about dental implants, one of dentistry’s modern miracles.
Have you lost any of your teeth? It’s a lot different than when you lost your baby teeth way back in the day. Adult teeth, alas, do not grow back. (And a gap-toothed smile doesn’t look as cute as it did when you were in kindergarten.)
A dental implant is a state-of-the-art replacement for a missing tooth. An implant consists of an artificial tooth PLUS an artificial root (usually biocompatible titanium). With local anesthesia, the artificial root is actually inserted into the jaw bone where it integrates with the bone tissue.
What makes dental implants such an attractive solution to a missing tooth is that they look and function like natural teeth. Because the titanium post is inserted into the jaw, and fuses with the bone, is provides solid support for the crown. You have nearly-normal biting power.
Just as important is the fact that dental implants can prevent bone recession. Bone recession is common when a tooth root is missing. But it doesn’t happen with the titanium implant in the natural root’s place.
